Smart water management systems are High-Tec solutions that integrate digital meters, sensors, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, and geographic information systems (GIS). This technology can transform conventional water and wastewater systems into instrumented, interconnected, and intelligent systems. Smart water management systems are ideal for producing more resilient and efficient water supply systems. Furthermore, cost savings and sustainability can be greatly improved.

We recently had the pleasure of getting involved in a project that proved to be a great case study for the application of a smart water management system in South Africa.

The Giyani Water Project

The Giyani Water Project, which was launched in 2014 to supply 55 of the rural villages with potable water within the Mopani District Municipality. The project is still incomplete in 2021. Seven years and R3.3 billion later, the Project has not reached the halfway mark as yet. The Project is tainted with allegations of corruption and “a lack of proper planning” according to the Minister of Water and Sewage, Mr. Senzo Mchunu.

Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha spoke about the delayed project on the 7th of September 2021 during a stakeholder engagement session. Mr. Mathabatha stated that he is committed to addressing the problems holding back the Giyani Water Project. Thereby ensuring that the project is completed in a timely manner. Residents will therefore hopefully gain access to a potable water supply soon.

Smart Water Management Solutions

Consolidated African Technologies (CAT) is looking forward to celebrating the first drop of running water to those 55 villages for the district and their residents. The great news is that CAT has a smart water management solution available that can assist Mopani District Municipality. This system can manage not only the water for the Giyani Water Project but that of the entire District.
